Description
Finding out where your bullet touches the lands is critical to finding the best seating depth for your barrel. The seating depth where the bullet touches provides a starting point, allowing you to try seating depths both into the lands or back from the lands.
One way of doing this is to seat a bullet long in a dummy round, remove the barrel and push the round into the chamber. You can feel the bullet stick when you pull the case back. By progressively seating the bullet deeper into the case you will eventually reach a point where it barely sticks. One thousandth deeper and there will be no resistance. The last measurement before zero resistance is the touchpoint. The Buzzard Bluff Touchpoint Tool provides a way to do this without removing the barrel.
For BR/308 case head cartridges, also available for PPC case heads.
